What It Does

True Comp Duplicator replicates entire composition hierarchies in After Effects, including all nested sub-comps. The standard After Effects duplicate only copies the top-level comp, leaving all sub-comps still linked to the original. This script does the full structure: every nested composition gets its own independent copy with relationships intact.

It also handles shared comps intelligently. If the same sub-comp appears in multiple places within your hierarchy, the script copies it once and updates all references rather than creating redundant duplicates.

Key Features

Full hierarchy duplication. Every nested comp in the chain gets copied, not just the top level. Changes to the duplicate won’t affect the original.

Depth limit control. Specify how many levels deep to duplicate. Useful when you only need to copy part of a hierarchy without touching deeply nested technical comps.

Automatic expression rewrites. Expressions in duplicated comps are updated to reference the new copies instead of the originals, preventing broken links.

Include and exclude filters. Use regular expressions to target comps by name. Duplicate everything except certain layers, or only copy comps matching a naming convention.

Batch duplication. Create multiple copies in one operation and select all duplicated items automatically on completion.

Who It’s For

Motion designers working with template files use this to create client-specific versions without touching the master. Compositors versioning complex shot builds can fork an entire pre-comp hierarchy to try a different approach while keeping the working version intact.

Template creators preparing multiple style variations can generate several independent versions in one pass, then customize each separately.
